Anderson is first up against Rochus who has proved tricky on the hard courts and beat Chela in the first round in Monte Carlo on clay. Anderson was unlucky last week in his quarter final match with Verdasco. He was a set up when play was stopped for bad light. This gave Verdasco a chance to sort his head out and the Spaniard came back the following day to take the 2nd and 3rd sets. Anderson starts at 1.52 and will expect to get the win. Even after yesterday’s results I can’t see Rochus being able to deal with Anderson’s big serve.

Troicki and Mayer go head to head on court 5.

Troicki wasn’t great last week and went out in his first match to Granollers. He reached the quarter finals in Monte Carlo losing to David Ferrer. Mayer lost to Davydenko in the final in Munich last week. He showed pockets of great play but my overall impression of him ( as always) was that he was unable to maintain a high level of play throughout a whole match. The last couple of times that Mayer has lost in a final ( both to Federer) were followed by poor losses in the next tournament. They have only played once this year and Troicki won that on a hard court. The courts in Madrid seem quite fast which may favour the Serb slightly. I’m going for a Troicki win.

Ljubicic v Simon: Simon has never beaten Ljubicic on clay and their overall head to head is 3-1 to the Croatian player. This is almost certainly going to be a 3 setter and I have to favour Ljubicic. I won’t be getting involved from the start though as the odds are too near evens.

Del Potro should get past Youzhny but 1.21 does seem a little insulting to the Russian. DP is in great form and won the Estoril Open. The top players aren’t usually affected by winning the previous tournament. Youzhny doesn’t have the consistency at the moemnt to win the match but could easily push DP’s price a bit higher.

Ranic v Lopez: Reasons to not back each player. Raonic quit from his match in Estoril with Verdasco having lost the opening set. He retired accusing back problems. Lopez reached the final of last week’s Serbia Open and will be motivated to do well in his home town but will he have the energy for the battle that this should be?

Monfils seems a decent price to beat Monaco ( 1.52 ). Monaco is 2-1 in their clay matches but hasn’t been in good form recently. Monfils seems to be taking things a little more seriously at the moment though I’m not sure how long that will last. He reached the quarter finals in Barcelona where he lost to Nadal and he beat Karlovic in straight sets yesterday. Monaco has lost 8 of his last 9 matches when playing a top 10 player.
