Djokovic makes an historic victory!
Novak Djokovic has continued his incredible winning streak by beating Rafael Nadal in the final of the Mutua Madrid Open.
Novak Djokovic has been in sensational form all season, but his victory over Rafael Nadal in Sunday’s Mutua Madrid Open may well be his most significant win of 2011 so far.
The Serb eventually overcame the defending champion 7-5, 6-4, and now has a 32-0 record for the season. On this kind of form, Djokovic is shaping up to be a major threat at Roland Garros.
It had been expected that Djokovic’s run might finally come to an end here, as he’d failed to beat Nadal on clay on nine previous occasions. To add to this, the world No. 1 had won 37 consecutive clay-court matchups prior to the final. This success for Djokovic could change the dynamics of the clay court season, and it looks like the 23 year-old will start to threaten Nadal’s reign at the top of the rankings. After all, Djokovic paid respect to his opponent after the match, saing, “first of all to Rafa bad luck today...It’s always a big challenge to play you, you are a great champion. Hopefully we can have many more matches”, he continued.
It certainly seems as if there will be plenty more showdowns between Djokovic and Nadal, and it will be fascinating to see if Djokovic can make again this superb run of results.
