Could Federer and Hingis Team Up for Olympic Mixed Doubles?

Written by Diana on 19 July 2011.

Is it possible that we could see Roger Federer and Martina Hingis competing together at the 2012 Olympics? The London Games will mark the introduction of a mixed doubles event into the tennis competition, and according to The Daily Forehand, Federer has already asked Hingis to be his partner.

Vivid news doing the rounds is the prospect of Roger Federer and Martina Hingis coming together for mixed doubles at the 2012 Olympics. After Hingis’s confirmation of the on Wednesday that she had been approached by a member of Federer’s camp about a chance of a doubles team comprising of the two, the opinions of the chances for the Swiss team to make the podium at Olympics have considerably enhanced. Before getting on with the plan, Hingis would need to take care of certain requirements before she is termed eligible for Olympic participation. When asked if Federer’s team had approached her about the subject, Hingis responded, “Yeah, they did. But who knows. I mean, I would have to play some doubles before, or some mixed—who knows?”

Although Hingis has looked solid in her World Team Tennis matches, leading the New York Sportimes to a 6-2 record thus far, she seemed unsure about the prospect of competing at next year’s Olympics.

“We’re still a long way away,” Hingis explained. “I don’t know, I don’t know. I’m not sure, because you have to really commit. And I feel great right now, but, you know, it’s still a long way to go, it’s another year.”

Federer won a gold medal in the 2008 men’s doubles event with partner Stanislas Wawrinka. Years earlier, the 16-time Grand Slam champion had paired up with five-time Grand Slam champion Hingis to lead Switzerland to a Hopman Cup title in 2001.
