Bernard Tomic vs. Jo-wilfried Tsonga - 2011 Rogers Cup Match Preview

Written by Diana on 10 August 2011.

Australian teen sensation Bernard Tomic will lock horns with experienced campaigner Jo Wilfried Tsonga of France in a second-round encounter of the 2011 Rogers Cup. Tomic is expected to test the mighty Frenchman.

Eighteen years old and currently World No. 68 Bernard Tomic of Australia has shown a lot of promise as a talented young-man in these early stages of his career and he is expected to test the World No. 16 Jo Wilfried Tsonga of France in a second-round encounter of the 2011 Rogers Cup, an ATP World Tour Masters Event, being played here at Montreal, Canada. Australian teenager upset Taiwan’s Lu Yen-hsun on Monday with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 scoreline in the first round encounter to set up this clash with Tsonga, who knocked out Italian Fabio Fognini 6-4, 7-6. Bernard Tomic shot to super stardom this year in January when he reached the Australian Open third round, giving home fans plenty to talk, and celebrate about. His road may have been ended by the 2009 champion Rafael Nadal, but Tomic left an impression. As months passed by, the Australian prepared himself for bigger tests and finally recorded his first ever top 10 win over Robin Soderling that also helped him secure his maiden Grand slam quarterfinal berth against the 'man-of-the-moment'- Novak Djokovic. Though he lost the match but he became the youngest man to reach the Wimbledon QFs since Becker in 1986.

Interestingly, France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reached the semifinals of Wimbledon this year, while his opponent Bernard Tomic was a surprise quarterfinalist at the All-England Club. Tsonga who has five ATP World Tour titles to his name has a satisfactory 28-14 win-loss record this year. The Frenchman had to miss out a greater part of the last season due to a nagging injury, but since making his come this year he is looking more resilient and focussed to bounce back into Top 10 in ATP Rankings.

Tomic has it all to upset Tsonga. So, we can expect an enthralling contest between the two.
