Andy Murray beats David Nalbandian in Cincinnati

Written by Diana on 18 August 2011.

Mighty Scot, Andy Murray had no problems eliminating former top ten player, David Nalbandian in straight sets in the second round of the Cincinnati Open.

World number 4, Andy Murray had a shaky start but then gathered his guts to beat David Nalbandian and marched into the third round of the Cincinnati Masters.

The number one British player snatched the 6-4 6-1 win over the experienced Argentinian at the Western & Southern Classic Masters tournament. Murray will now meet Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Alex Bogomolov Jr. in the pre-quarters on Thursday. Murray displayed a confident and consistent game as he followed an early exit at Montreal last week. He ended up strengthening his preparations for the US Open, which begins on August 29.

The Scot managed to wither off jitters when Nalbandian broke in the opening game of the match. He also stayed calm and worked his way through the match even after losing the subsequent game after earning five break points.

Murray continued to focus and played an error-free game as he broke back in the sixth game to restore parity before striking again in game 10 to take the opening set when Nalbandian dug a stroke into net.

After a brief exchange of early breaks of serve in the second set, Murray shifted gears to his top game and raced with a straight set win. He said, "It was tough. I haven't played a lot of matches lately. He's one of the most talented players on the tour. He started well, they were very fast courts so I struggled to control the ball. But I felt much better in the second set."

This win will definitely boost Murray’s confidence for his upcoming matches. In other matches, Rafael Nadal beat Julien Benneteau, 6-4, 7-5 as Nicolas Almagro defeated Ivo Karlovic in three tough sets. Mardy Fish beat Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets as Fernando Verdasco beat Michael Llodra, 6-4, 6-4. Czech veteran, Radek Stepanek also beat Andrey Golubev to enter the pre-quarters in Cincinnati.
