ATP US Open 2011 Preview: Andy Murray vs. Somdev Devvarman
Andy Murray begins his US Open on Wednesday against India's Somdev Devvarman.
Murray has been a bit frustrated with the TV-orientated scheduling here in New York which has meant he's been forced to wait until Wednesday to get on court for his first round match. "Bizarre," was all Murray would comment on the situation but as a former finalist at the US Open he's learnt to deal with the vagaries of the tournament over the year. His title-winning run in Cincinnati a fortnight ago gave him a much needed boost ahead of the year's final major and he will be looking to continue his admirable consistency in the slams this year, having reached the Australian Open final and semi-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. No one can say Murray does not peak for the biggest events anymore. The past two US Opens have been disappointing for Murray. He crashed out in last sixteen two years ago to the power of Marin Cilic while struggling with a wrist injury and even more disappointingly, he was out-thought and outplayed by Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round twelve months ago.
However the world number four believes the surface and atmosphere of Flushing Meadows offers him his best chance to break through at the very highest level. Murray relishes the razzmatazz and general vibrance of this city and he's been in love with the event ever since winning the junior title back in 2004.
As ever he's fully briefed on what Devvarman has to offer. India's top player has enjoyed one of his best seasons, knocking out a couple of top 50 players this summer but he won't have enough in his game to test Murray.
"He doesn't have one huge weapon but he has a really good attitude and works hard so it will be a tough one," Murray said.
