Sharapova, Stosur storm into the third-round of US Open

Former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova of Russia earned a comprehensive 6-1 6-1 victory over World No. 84 Anastasiya Yakimova to reach the third-round of the 2011 US Open. Sharapova is joined by Samantha Stosur of Australian in the third round. Stosur beat Coco Vandeweghe of USA in straight sets with a 6-3 6-4 scoreline.

2006 US Open winner Maria Sharapova of Russia easily made it into the third-round at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday night after registering a comprehensive 6-1 6-1 victory over World No. 84 Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarussian. Sharapova needed just 69 minutes to win the match, as she earned 76% points on her first-serve to reach the third-round of the 2011 US Open. The Russian hammered 28 winners and converted 4 out of 5 break points. Yakimova failed to convert a single break point out of five.

Sharapova comprehensively clinched the first set with a 6-1 in 42 minutes of play. The Russian committed 17 errors but hammered equal number of winners to win the first set easily. Sharapovoa converted 2 out of 2 break points, while Yakimova failed to convert a single break point out of 5. The trend continued in the second-set too, as Sharapova broke Yakimova twice and won the second-set in just 27 minutes of play. In the third-round, Sharapova will take on Italian World No. 27 Flavia Pennetta, who eased past her compatriot Romina Oprandi with a 6-0 6-3 scoreline.

Australian 9th seed Samantha Stosur is through to the third round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows after she thrashed America's Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-4 scoreline.

Stosur won this match in 1 hour and 40 minutes, as she broke Vandeweghe in the penultimate game of the second-set and converted her third match point with a backhand winner. In the third-round, Stosur will face Russian 24th seed Nadia Petrova, who defeated Slovenia's Polona Hercog 6-2, 6-4.

After the match, Stosur exclaimed, "I think I played a pretty solid match, she can be a pretty dangerous player, she's got big shots and big weapons ... if she was going to win it, she was really going to have to earn it from me." The Australian further added that "I think for her it's a matter of putting it all together and not making silly mistakes at crucial times."

On the other hand, American teen Christina McHale reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, after upsetting eight-seeded Marion Bartoli in straight sets with a 7-6 6-2 scoreline on Wednesday.
