ATP US Open 2011 Preview: Bernard Tomic vs. Marin Cilic

Australian tennis sensation Bernard Tomic will take on World No. 28 Marin Cilic of Croatia in a second-round encounter of the 2011 US Open. Both contenders have been coming off from straight sets victories in their first-round matches, here at Flushing Meadows. Thus, we can expect an enthralling contest between them.

When last time they met, both contenders tested each other to a great extent before Marin Cilic managed to pull off a hard-earned victory in five set with a 6-7 (6) 6-3 4-6 6-2 6-4 scoreline over Bernard Tomic and secured his berth in the third-round of the 2010 Aussie Open. Well, they are meeting once again, in a second-round of a Grand Slam, but this time it’s Flushing Meadows – but the surface will be hard-court. It will be their second-meeting as they will lock horns to secure their berth in the third-round of the 2011 US Open. Hence, we can brace ourselves for another exciting showdown between these two highly talented ATP stars.

In the first round of the 2011 US Open, World No. 28 Marin Cilic secured a straight sets 6-2 7-5 7-6 victory over American Ryan Harrison. On the other hand, Tomic subdued another American Michael Yani with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 scoreline to set up this second-round clash with World No. 28 Marin Cilic.

Currently, Tomic is the highest ranked Australian male tennis player and the youngest contender in Top 100. Tomic has a poor 9-9 win-loss record this year. The Australian delighted his home fans earlier this year by making it to the third-round at Aussie Open and then reached the quarter-final at Wimbledon after upsetting two-time Grand Slam finalist Robin Soderling.

On the other hand, Cilic surprised everyone by reaching the semi-finals of the Aussie Open in 2010. The Croatian had not produced anticipated results in the new season and he has an ordinary 30-17 win-loss record this year. The Croatian has five ATP titles to his name – so far.
