Federer breezes past Sela in New York, Berdych safely through
Federer made a strong start to the match and broke Sela repeatedly to race to a quick 5-1 lead when Sela got one of the breaks back to make his presence felt in the match. Soon, Federer clinched the opening set 6-3.
26 minutes later, Federer raced to a formidable two sets to love lead with a series of service breaks in his favour.
Federer's impressive all court game continued in the third set as well, and after breaking Sela's serve one last time in the seventh game, Federer served for the match to complete the 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win in a mere 77 minutes of play.
Federer was later joined by Czech Tomas Berdych, who breezed past Italian Fabio Fognini 7-5, 6-0, 6-0 to move ahead in the draw. Berdych already has beaten Federer this year and being in the same half, he may lock horns with the Swiss maestro.
Other notable winners of the day were Tommy Haas, Kevin Anderson, Janko Tipsarevic and Juan Monaco, who all scored contrasting victories over their respective opponents to move ahead in the draw.
