Well, now it means that the last match between Lleyton Hewitt and Stanislas Wawrinka will determine which country advances to the elite 16-team World Group next year.
Federer did well to tackle the swirling winds and hot conditions at the grass court at Royal Sydney Golf Club on Sunday and played some fine ground-strokes to emerge victorious in the end. After the match, Federer said, "It was tough conditions today, but I really had a pleasure coming down here and playing; we'll see how it all works out in the fifth rubber." When asked about Tomic, Federer quoted, "I think we were both able to play well. Bernie, I think he did a good job as well, making it difficult for me today so also credit to him for a good weekend.”
The Swiss further added that "He plays tennis, you know, he does. It's not like we've never seen a sliced backhand before and stuff. But look, he's very good for his young age and I'm sure he's had to endure a lot of pressure over the years, especially from a country with this rich heritage in tennis, and I think he's doing really well; I think he's really lived up to the expectations this year and he's still on the rise... I think this weekend's going to give him a lot for the rest of his career."
