BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy: Filippo Volandri vs. Joao Souza
Filippo Volandri looks to make the second ATP semi-final of his season when he plays Joao Souza in Friday's Bucharest quarters.
Former world number 25 Volandri recaptured the glory years of his career with a 6-1, 6-3 dismissal of second seed Marcel Granollers on Thursday. It was a stunning win for the 30 year old world number 86 who' s spent much of the summer struggling for consistency. When on song, Volandri looks like a class act but he throws in the odd dire performance on a fairly ad hoc basis these days and is as likely to crash out in the first round of a challenger as he is to win one of these ATP 250 titles.
However the Italian has built up some decent recent form, reaching the Todi challenger final last week and with the bottom half of the draw wide open, there's no reason why he can't reach the same stage this week.
Souza is looking to reach his second semi-final of the summer after a decent run in Kitzbuhel last month. The Brazilian saw off a rusty Tommy Robredo in the opening round and was then rather fortunate to get past wildcard Adrian Ungur on Thursday. Ungur had four match points but lost his nerve on the biggest stage of his career and went down 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-1.
