Murray, Monfils reach quarters at Bangkok
Top-seed Andy Murray of Great Britain earned a comprehensive 6-4 6-2 victory over Michael Berrer of Germany to reach the quarterfinal of the 2011 Thailand Open. Murray is joined by second-seeded Gael Monfils in the quarters.
World No. 4 Andy Murray of Great Britain earned a comprehensive 6-4 6-2 victory over Michael Berrer of Germany to reach the quarterfinal of the 2011 Thailand Open. Murray is joined by second seeded and fourteenth ranked Gael Monfils in the quarters. Monfils saved five of six break points and fired eleven aces to rally past Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in almost two hours on Thursday at the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok.Monfils said, "I expected a tough match. Even after I lost the second set, I felt I was moving better and hitting my ground strokes well, so I was positive that I could do well in the third set."
American Donald Young outclassed champion and fourth seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-7(0), 7-5 in just over two and a half hours. Young said, "I feel good to have got a win like that. I held my nerve, because I missed chances to break in the second set."
The 43rd ranked player will be playing Japanese qualifier Go Soeda, who earned a 6-2, 7-6(7) victory over impressive German, Tobias Kamke.
