ATP Beijing Open: Jo Wilfried Tsonga vs. Juan Ferrero

Written by Diana on 07 October 2011.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continues his bid for back to back ATP titles when he plays Juan Carlos Ferrero in the quarters of the China Open today.

Tsonga claimed the Metz title a fortnight ago and the French star is gunning for back to back titles this week. He eased into the last eight with a 6-3, 6-4 win over wildcard Ze Zhang on Thursday. Tsonga's experience and class prevailed in the end and he commented, "I think when you reach the Top 100 you can see the difference with the serve and with the returns."

Ferrero generally saves his best for the ATP 250 events on clay these days but he surprised many people with a run to the fourth round of the US Open last month. The Spaniard's going pretty strongly this week and he saw off close friend Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

"I like to play against him," Ferrero said afterwards. "I feel very good every time I come to Asia. I know that I have a lot fans here supporting me all the time, so for me it's amazing to come here very far, far away from home and feel like at home."

However he trails Tsonga 2-1 on the head-to-head and he's under no illusions about how difficult it will be today.

"I think [Jo's] a great player. He's in a good shape. He's been playing very well [for] most of the season on the hard courts, and of course he's one of the favourites to win the tournament. But it's going to be a nice match for me. He [has beaten] me on hard court and I beat him on clay court. It will be another challenge for me," he said.
