ATP Shanghai Masters: Bernard Tomic vs. Mardy Fish

Written by Diana on 11 October 2011.

Bernard Tomic has been winning major matches and has catapulted into the top fifty. He will be facing Mardy Fish in the second round of the 2011 Shanghai ATP Masters. Bernard Tomic is ranked number 49 in the world. On the other hand, Mardy Fish is ranked 9 among ATP rankings

Fish is now the lone American in the top ten and has carved his place among the best with some sensational performances this year. He reached the quarterfinals in Wimbledon and then had an amazing run at the US season with a title at Atlanta, final spot in Los Angeles and Canada in addition to a semi-final place in Cincinnati. He also was among the last four at Tokyo last week. Fish will be trying to get past the first week here too in order to make it to the season ending Masters Series event which will be held in London.

Tomic has proved in the past that he can handle immense pressure. After immense success at the challenger level, he has been trying to fish out a title on the ATP tour but has not been able to do so yet. He had an amazing run in Wimbledon as he qualified and reached the quarterfinals. He then reached the quarterfinals in Tokyo only to lose to Fish in three tough sets. He has beaten Kevin Anderson in the first round and will be on the prowl for vengeance in his second round match against Fish.

Both the players have met two times before and Fish leads the head-to-head at 2-0. The last time they met was last week in Tokyo where Fish won in three sets. Fish can aim stinging first serves and can strike massive backhands from the back of the court. Tomic is known for his cannon first serves and flattening forehands with which he can dominate points on his serve. Fish should be able to battle past the Aussie in a three set slugfest.
