Mayer stuns Nadal at Shanghai ATP Masters

Fifteenth-seeded Florian Mayer of Germany caused a massive upset of the 2011 Shanghai ATP Masters, as he ousted top-seeded Rafael Nadal in straight sets with a 7-6(5) 6-3 scoreline and reached the quarter-final this ATP Masters Tournament.

World No. 23 Florian Mayer of Germany earned the biggest win of his career on Thursday by upsetting the top-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain with a 7-6(5) 6-3 scoreline and secured his berth in the quarter-final 2011 Shanghai ATP Masters, an ATP World Tour 1000 Tournament, being played here at Shanghai, China.

Mayer earned this victory in 1 hour and 47 minutes of play, as the German produced some tremendous shots on both sides of the court and did not allow the feisty Spaniard to make a comeback into the match – after winning the first set. Mayer fired 5 aces, earned 89% points on his first serve and mustered 29 winners as compared to Nadal’19. Nadal also committed 24 unforced errors. Mayer converted 2 out of 4 break points, while Nadal did not have a break point – throughout the match.

Both the players held on to their serves in the first set and it reached the tie-break. Mayer did not fumble in the tie-breaker and snatched away the first-set from Rafael Nadal, exactly in one hour. Mayer earned 91% points on his first serve, as he fired 16 winners and got benefited from Nadal's 17 unforced errors. Mayer had two breaks points but he failed to convert those. Nadal tried to put pressure on Mayer but failed to do so in the second-set. The German earned the breakthrough in the seventh game of the second-set and broke Nadal again in the ninth game to win this match in straight sets.

In the quarter-final, Mayer will take on the winner of the match between Tomas Berdych and Feliciano Lopez.
