Murray edges past Wawrinka to reach Shanghai Masters quarterfinal

Defending champion Andy Murray of Great Britain rallied past thirteenth seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 scoreline and reached the quarter-final of the 2011 Shanghai ATP Masters.

Chasing his third title on Asian hard-court swing this season, defending champion Andy Murray of Great Britain subdued thirteenth seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 scoreline and reached the quarter-final of the 2011 Shanghai Masters, an ATP World Tour 1000 Event, being played here at Shanghai, China. With this victory, Murray improved his record to a 6-4 against Wawrinka.

The Scot won the match in 2 hours and 11 minutes, as he fired 4 aces, earned 73% points on his first serve and hammered 23 winners. Wawrinka did well by winning the second-set, but failed to maintain the momentum in the final set. The Swiss committed 34 unforced errors, while Murray converted 4 out of 5 break points.

Murray clinched the first-set in 43 minutes, as he made quick in-roads into the match and maintained his dominance to go one set up on a convincing note. The Scot earned 80% points on his first serve, as he converted 2 out of 3 break points. Wawrinka served poorly and also committed 2 double-faults to make it a lot easier for the Scot.

Wawrinka responded well in the second-set, as he opted for a fine counter-attack and took the match into the final set. Wawrinka won the second-set in 39 minutes, as he converted 1 out of 3 break points and mustered 69% points on his first serve. Wawrinka hammered 10 winners and got benefited from Murray's 13 unforced errors in the second-set. Murray looked very frustrated after losing the second-set and unleashed his power-game, as he raced to a 5-0 lead with multiple breaks in hand, but just when it looked that Murray would run away with the final set, but the Scot lost his concentration and allowed the Swiss to make a comeback. Finally, the Scot sailed home with a 6-4 3-6 6-3.
