Murray becomes world number three after winning Shanghai
Andy Murray has overtaken Roger Federer to become world number three after beating David Ferrer in the 2011 Shanghai Masters final.
Murray defended his title with a straight sets win over the world number five to earn his eighth Masters Series title from just nine finals. It's a conversion rate he can only dream of repeating in the Grand Slams. It's been a brilliant autumn so far for Murray who's also won titles in Bangkok and Tokyo though he insisted he can't get complacent as Federer can still overtake him if he performs well in Basel, Paris and at the ATP World Finals.
"My goal for the last three-four months after the US Open was to try to finish as high as possible and win as many matches as I could. It's obviously been a great start. But I'm still not guaranteed to finish at No. 3," Murray explained. "I'm still going to have to win some more matches. But if you finish in front of Federer in a year, then there's not many people the last five, six, seven years that have been able to say that. So that's obviously a nice thing if I can do it."
"For a lot of years everything went very right for Federer. He's had a few tournaments this year where maybe things could have gone his way and they didn't but I'm sure next year he'll be competing. He's still playing great tennis."
Murray is next scheduled to compete at the Paris Masters which begins on November 7th.
