WTA Madrid Sunday Preview
Victoria Azarenka vs. Petra Kvitova
The main event from WTA Madrid features a match between two players who are emerging as possible Slam contenders.
Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova are the last two players standing at the 2011 Mutua Madrid Open (WTA Madrid) and they will meet on Sunday in what looks like a fantastic match-up.
Both players have been sharp in 2011 as Azarenka has recent titles from Marbella and Miami while Kvitova has titles this season from Brisbane and Paris. Azarenka will be into the top four with Monday's ranking updates while Kvitova, who has wins this year over multiple top 10 players, appears as though she will be threatening to crack the top 10 soon.
The two players have met head-to-head just three times with Azarenka winning two of their matches. Kvitova did win their last match however which took place at Wimbledon 2010, a straight sets victory for the Czech player.
They have met one time on clay however that match was back in 2008 as Azarenka won in straight sets in Prague. That match took place at a time before the two players made their marks on tour however and the result from that event is not that significant when looking at Sunday's match.
What is significant is that the betting trends certainly favor Azarenka in the match as she is considered a favorite with. Kvitova is the underdog as she plays in her first Premier Mandatory final.
Azarenka is undoubtedly the more experienced player as she is looking more and more like a Grand Slam threat after some growing pains in 2010.
