Serena edges Zheng; Ivanovic loses at Rogers Cup
Former World No 1 Serena Williams bounced back after first set loss to register a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory against Chinese Jie Zheng and reached the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup on Thursday.
"The thought 'I'm gonna lose' never ever crosses my mind, even if I'm down match point," Williams said. "After I lost the first set, I just thought about the third set. If I lose the first set, I'm automatically thinking about the third set."
Earlier in the day, fourth seeded Victoria Azarenka raced past Spanish qualifier María José Martínez Sánchez 6-1, 6-2.
Also, Roberta Vinci booked her place in the final eight by beating Ana Ivanovic 7-6(3), 6-2.
In other upset of the day, Czech Lucie Safarova dispatched eight seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-3, 6-3.
No. 3 seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia was also beaten 6-4, 7-6 (4) by Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.
