WTA U.S Open 2011 Preview: Vera Zvonareva vs. Kateryna Bondarenko

Written by Diana on 31 August 2011.

Vera Zvonareva will take on Kateryna Bondarenko on Wednesday in round two of the U.S Open.

World No. 2 Vera Zvonareva got her U.S Open campaign underway in style this week by easing past her French opponent Stephanie Foretz Gacon in round one (6-3, 6-0). The Russian broke her opponents serve five times, and her 19 winners helped her to get the match finished in just over an hour. Zvonareva will now continue her quest for the title with a second round matchup against Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine. Bondarenko also won her opening match 6-3, 6-0 (d. Lucie Hradecka), winning 71 percent of the points played on her first serve. Bondarenko’s performance was superb, but she can expect a much tougher encounter against Zvonareva.

Zvonareva currently holds a 1-0 head to head record against Bondarenko, following a sole victory in Memphis in 2005. Bondarenko has shown great improvement since then, but the second seed will still enter this matchup as the clear favourite. The majority of pundits and fans will be expecting her to win again on Wednesday.
