Serena, Ivanovic win, Na Li stunned at U.S Open
Current World No. 29 Serena Williams of USA made a perfect start to her 2011 US Open campaign by registering a comprehensive 6-1 6-1 victory over World No. 54 Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia. Serena is joined by another former World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic in the second-round after Ivanovic earned an easy first-round victory over Ksenia Pervak in straight sets with a 6-2 7-5 scoreline . In an upset of the day, French Open champion Na Li of China was ousted by unseeded Romanian teenager Simona Halep in straight sets with a 6-2 7-5 scoreline.
Serena won this match in just 55 minutes of play, as she hammered 21 massive winners and converted 4 out of 11 break points to sail through. Jovanovski did not have a single break point opportunity throughout the match.
Serena took only 25 minutes to win the first set, Serena comprehensively pocketed it with a 6-1 score. The former World No. 1 American broke Jovanovski twice and did not allow her to make a comeback afterwards. Serena earned 85% points on her first serve, as she hammered 12 winners and converted 2 out of 4 break points in the first set. Jovanovski did not have any break points in the first set. The trend continued in the second-set and Serena took 35 minutes to clinch and won the match – in an empathic style.
In the second-round, Serena will take on Michaella Krajicek of Netherlands, who defied a strong challenge of Eleni Daniilidou of Germany and beat her in three gruelling sets with a 3-6 7-6 6-1 scoreline.
In an upset of the day, French Open champ Li Na of China was ousted by unseeded Romanian teenager Simona Halep in straight sets with a 6-2 7-5 scoreline. Li did not fire a single ace throughout the match and could only keep 61% of her first serves in. The Chinese contender had only 22 winners in the contest.
Li reflected, “Before the match, I talked to my coach,” she said. “I said I didn’t have good timing to hit the ball. He tells me everything is perfect, everything is fantastic.” She further added that “I really wanted to do well after Roland Garros. But Now I lose all the confidence on the court. I was feeling, ‘Oh, tennis is just too tough for me.”
On the other hand, former World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia eased past Ksenia Pervak with a 6-4 6-2 scoreline to reach the second-round of the 2011 US Open. In the second-round Ivanovic will take on World No. 40 Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic, who rallied past Evgeniya Rodina of Russia with a 1-6 6-1 6-2 scoreline.
