WTA US Open 2011 Preview: Caroline Wozniacki vs. Arantxa Rus

Caroline Wozniacki will take on Arantxa Rus on Thursday for a place in the third round of the U.S Open.

Caroline Wozniacki is bidding to finally clinch her first slam title following a lengthy stay at the top of the world rankings. The Dane has been in superb form throughout the season, but hasn’t quite managed to find her game at the premier level events. Her start in New York is encouraging though, and she’ll be pleased to have cruised past Nuria Llagostera Vives in round one (6-3, 6-1).

Wozniacki’s next matchup will take place on Thursday. She’ll face Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands for a place in the third round. Rus has been fairly successful this season, though she’s occasionally dipped in and out of form. Her best result was a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over second seed Kim Clijsters in this year’s French Open.

Rus caused an upset against Elena Vesnina in the first round here, but a second round win against Wozniacki is too much to expect of her. The top seed should be able to progress on Thursday, but it’s likely that Rus will show no shortage of effort and determination.
