Serena Williams storms into US Open third round, Petkovic struggles

Written by Diana on 02 September 2011.

Three time former champion Serena Williams overwhelmed Michaella Krajicek to join Andrea Petkovic and others into the next round of the 2011 US Open.

The undisputed queen of women's tennis, Serena Williams made waves with her power packed performance and defeated Dutch Michaella Krajicek to advance to the third round of the 2011 US Open, season's fourth and final Grand Slam event being played here at Flushing Meadows in New York, USA.

Serena made an awe-inspiring start to the match, hitting blistering ground strokes from all corners of the court to wrap up the first set 6-0 in just 22 minutes.

The second set did not change the story much and Williams repeatedly broke Krajicek's serve to soon complete the 6-0, 6-1 vicotry in 49 minutes of play.

Serena hit a whopping 25 winners in the entire match besides 10 aces. Krajicek, on the other hand, committed 18 unforced errors that made the road to victory easier for Williams.

Serena was later joined by German Andrea Petkovic, who struggled past Chinese Jie Zheng 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance ahead in the draw. Petkvic has been extremely consistent this season and has a title from Strasbourg already to her credit.

Other notable winners of the day so far are Francesca Schiavone, Carla Suarez Navarro, Chanelle Scheepers, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Silvia Soler-Espinosa, who stunned last year's quarterfinalist and 31st seed Kaia Kanepi in straight sets to move ahead in the draw.
