WTA U.S Open 2011 Preview: Flavia Pennetta vs. Angelique Kerber
Flavia Pennetta and Angelique Kerber will meet on court on Tuesday in the quarter-finals of the U.S Open.
Flavia Pennetta continued her exciting run in this year’s U.S Open by edging past a determined Shuai Peng on Sunday. The Italian hit a remarkable 41 winners against Peng, and this ultimately enabled her to break down a stern resistance from the thirteenth seed.
Pennetta will now face Angelique Kerber on Tuesday in what could be described as an unexpected quarter-final clash. Kerber has only lost one set in this competition so far, and this happened against Agnieszka Radwanska, who has been in good form recently. It will be intriguing to see how long Kerber’s title challenge will last.
Pennetta faced Kerber quite recently in Bastad, where she clinched a 6-2, 6-3 success. This is the only previous meeting between the pairing to date, and Pennetta seems likely to get the upper hand on Tuesday. The winner of this matchup will face either Vera Zvonareva or Samantha Stosur in the semi-finals.
