WTA U.S Open match preview: Vera Zvonareva vs. Samantha Stosur

Written by Diana on 07 September 2011.

Vera Zvonareva is scheduled to take on Samantha Stosur tonight for a berth in the final four at the U.S Open.

Second seed Vera Zvonareva produced a sublime display on Sunday to defeat German up-and-comer Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round of the U.S Open. Lisicki stood out as a serious threat to the world No. 2’s chances, but Zvonareva cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 success. The 26 year-old might just be ready to claim her first slam title.

That said, there’s plenty of work ahead for the Russian. She’ll take on ninth seed Samantha Stosur tonight in the quarter-finals, and won’t be expecting an easy matchup.

Stosur lost a gruelling second set tie-breaker in round four against Maria Kirilenko, but eventually prevailed with a 6-2, 6-7(15), 6-3 victory.

Stosur has been a troublesome opponent for Zvonareva in the past, and amazingly she’s won her last seven matches against the second seed. Zvonareva came close in the last two of the meetings between the pairing though, and past form doesn’t suggest that Stosur will have everything her own way on Tuesday. This has the makings of a fascinating contest.
