WTA U.S Open Semi-final preview: Samantha Stosur vs. Angelique Kerber
Samantha Stosur and Angelique Kerber will meet on Saturday for what promises to be an intriguing U.S Open semi-final.
Samantha Stosur hadn’t been particularly successful in any of this year’s other slams, but she’s been red hot in New York, and finds herself in the semi-finals following a 6-3, 6-3 dismissal of world No. 2 Vera Zvonareva. Stosur has come close to winning slams before, but she’s not yet managed to go the distance. Maybe she can achieve the biggest success of her career to date here at Flushing Meadows.Stosur’s semi-final opponent will be world No. 92 Angelique Kerber. Kerber has surprised fans worldwide by reaching the first slam semi-final of her career this week, and many are now hoping that the 23 year-old can continue her dream run. She will be pleased with her 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 success against Flavia Pennetta in the last eight, though in truth she’s not likely to get any further unless she raises her game once again.
Stosur is likely to get the upper hand on Friday, and her experience at this level looks like a potentially vital factor. Kerber has been in good form all week, but it’s also fair to say that she’s been very fortunate with how the draw has unfolded. This should be a fiercely contested semi-final, but Stosur should have what it takes to see off the outsider.
