Serena Williams closing in on third US Open title
Serena Williams is just a couple of steps away from her third US Open title as she takes on Caroline Wozniacki in tonight’s semi-finals.
Serena has been in awesome form all summer and the way she dispatched fourth seed Victoria Azarenka with ease in the third round just showed what it will take to stop her marching to victory on Sunday night.World number one Wozniacki is the latest to try. They’ve only ever played one full match on the tour before, a marathon encounter in Sydney two years ago which Serena won in a third seed tiebreak. She has the speed and consistency to give the American problems but can she rise to the big occasion ? She was the title favourite last year but capitulated at this stage to Vera Zvonareva.
“I think Caroline is a very consistent player,” Serena said. “I think both consistent on the court and then consistent in playing tournaments and doing well and winning tournaments as well as going really far in tournaments. That's pretty much what it takes to be the best.”
Wozniacki has received much criticism for her lack of a big, point-ending weapon but Serena was not about to jump on the bandwagon.
“I think her weapon is the fact that she never gives up,” the thirteen time Grand Slam champion told the media. “You saw she was playing Kuznetsova and she was down and she came back. That's probably the biggest weapon I think you can have in all of tennis. Also, she's moving really fast. She's running every ball down. That's a great weapon to have, as well.”
